OF COMMUNITY HEALTH
In October 1988, the federal government of Nigeria
launched National health solicy. The bedrock of the
policy is the primary health care. In the spirit of
health for al, the PHC aims to serve as many Nigerians
as possible especially those in the peripheral community.
At the peripheral level of National Health system,
there are different categories of community Health
Extension Workers.
They work as a team and perform the following roles.
i. Management of resources to achieve maximum result
ii. Planning and implementation of health programme
iii. Health Education.
iv. Record keeping and data collection for monitori
ng and evaluation programme.
v. Liaising with other agencies whose functions are
Health related (i.e. intersectoral
collaboration).
vi. Training of traditional birth attendants (TBA)
to reduce the risk of compilation arising from poor
management of cases.
vii. Evaluation of Programmes
viii. Referral Service
AVAILABLE COURSE
The school of Health Technology, Ofuoma-Ughelli was
given accreditation to train the community health
extension workers with effect from 1999 in the foll
owing areas:-
COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENTION WORKERS COURSE DURATION;

The course is a three year
programme.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
The entry requirements are 4 credit pass which must
include: Mathematics, English Language,
Chemistry, Biology and any subject.
EXPECTED CERTIFICATE
Certificate in community health extension workers.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
The curriculum is structured into units which inclu
de: Information, Education and Communication,
Management of primary health care, including essential drug and drug revolving fund. It containsvarying
amounts of content to support the objectives and to
act as guidelines to the load of teaching expected
.
GUIDELINES ON SIWES PROGRAMME
It is expected that as much as possible the trainee
s will spend considerable amount of time in the
practice areas under the supervision of their tutor
s, and other health workers.
JUNIORS COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENSION WORKERS
Certificate course in Juniors Community Health.
DURATION
The course is a two year programme.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
5 pass in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry,
Biology and any other subject.
GUIDELINES FOR SIWES
Students must carry out 80% of his/her function in
the community and 20% in the clinic serve as a link
between the community and the health facility for c
ontinuous care.
