DEPARTMENT
OF PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING (2 YEARS)
GOALS
The programme is designed to produce public health nursing officers capable of planning implementing
health care programme for individuals and communities such as places of work, rural communities ,industries, schools, and homes.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this programme, the students should be able to:
Know the health need and provide appropriate healthcare in the community,
Apply the nursing process in providing comprehensive health to individuals’ facilities and groups in thecommunity health education activity.
Organize community health education activities.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The minimum entry requirements in the Higher National Diploma in public health nursing are:
W.A.S.C.E/G.C.E./S.S.C.E: 5 credit passes including

English Language, Mathematics, Biology and two(2) science subjects.
National Diploma or equivalent in Nursing
Nigerian Registered Nursing (NRN) certificate
Nigerian Registered Midwife Certificate or Psychiatric Nursing certificate plus one year post qualification experience.
Male Nurses should have additional certificate of the Nursing Certificate
CURRICULUM
The curriculum of all HND programmes consists of four main components. These are:
a. General Studies/Education b. Foundation Courses
c. Professional Courses d. Supervised Industrial
Work Experience Scheme
THE GENERAL EDUCATION COMPONENT SHALL INCLUDE COURS

Art and Humanities –
English Language, Communications, History, These ar
e compulsory.
Mathematics and Science (For non-science based programmes).
Social Sciences –
Citizenship (the Nigerian constitution) Political science, sociology, philosophy,Geography, Entrepreneurship.
Physical and Health Education(One Semester Credit).
The General Education Component shall account for not more than 15% of total contact hours for the programme.
FOUNDATION COURSES
This includes courses in Economics, Mathematics, Pure science, Technical Drawing, Descriptive Geometry, Statistics, etc.
The number of hours will vary with the programme and may account for about 10-15% of the total contact hours.
a. Professional courses are which gives the students the history and practical skill he/she needs to practice in his/her field or calling at the technical level.
ii. Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme (S
IWES) shall be taken during the vacation following the end of the second semester of the first year.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE:
HND Programme: The structure consists of four semesters of classroom, laboratory workshopactivities in the college and a semester (3-4months) of Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme
(SIWES),  shall  take place at the end of the first year. 15 contact weeks of teaching i.e. lecture and practical exercise, etc. and 2 weeks of registration, tests, quizzes and examination.
CONDITION FOR AWARD OF HND
WAHEB shall award the Higher Diploma to candidates who successfully completed the programme after passing all prescribed course work examinations, diploma project and SIWES.
Diploma should be awarded on the following classification:
GRADE GPA
Distinction 3.50-4.00
Upper Credit 3.00-3.49
Lower Credit 2.50-2.99
Pass 2.00-2.49
GRADING OF SIWES
To ensure uniformity scales, the institution shall ensure the grading of student’s work which has been agreed to by all polytechnics is adopted and includes:
i. The Institution-Based Supervisor
ii. Frequency of Visit
iii. SIWES as component of the curriculum.
Successful cand9idates from HND programme are qualified to register with the Nursing,
Midwife Council of Nigeria.
HEALTH ASSISTANT PROGRAMME
OBJECTIVES
To increase labour force as it relates grassroots cleanliness and health care delivery.
To inculcate professionalism into health workers with the aim of primary prevention and control of disease.To bring community consciousness to hospital environment.
CERTIFICARE OFFERED
At the end of the course, successful students shall be given state health certificate.
