Subject: English Language / Verbal Aptitude

Class: Primary 1

Term: 1st Term

Week: 3

Topic: Phonemic Awareness: Songs and Rhymes (Safety, Teamwork, and Work Ethics)

Duration: 40 Minutes

 Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Sing educational rhymes with correct rhythm and pronunciation.

  2. Identify rhyming words (words with the same ending sounds) in a song or poem.

  3. Explain the moral lessons behind songs touching on personal safety, empathy, teamwork, and work ethics.

 1. Core Concept: What are Rhyming Words?

Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end. In this lesson, we listen out for words that have matching ending sounds when we sing.

  • Examples:

    • Day and Stay

    • Run and Done

    • Late and Gate

 2. Theme-Based Songs and Rhymes

Theme A: Keeping Away from Unsafe People and Places (Personal Safety)

This rhyme teaches children to recognize stranger danger and avoid dangerous areas like lonely roads or abandoned buildings.

The Safety Song

No, no, stranger, I cannot play,

If you are unsafe, I will run away!

I’ll stay in the light where it is bright,

Safely at home before it is night.

  • Rhyming Words to Identify: play / away, bright / night.

  • Lesson: Never accept gifts or walks from strangers, and do not play in dark, lonely places.

Theme B: Empathy and Teamwork (Working Together)

This rhyme teaches children to understand the feelings of others and cooperate with classmates.

Hand in Hand

When you are sad, I will not run,

Working together is so much fun!

You lift the box, I’ll hold the door,

Together we can do much more!

  • Rhyming Words to Identify: run / fun, door / more.

  • Lesson: Help your friends when they are struggling. Teamwork makes difficult tasks easy.

Theme C: Work Ethics (Dependability, Punctuality, and Dedication)

This rhyme highlights the importance of being reliable, coming to school early, and finishing tasks properly.

Tick-Tock, Early to School

The morning clock says do not wait,

Walk through the school door, don’t be late!

Do your work with all your might,

Finish the job and do it right!

  • Rhyming Words to Identify: wait / late, might / right.

  • Lesson: Punctuality means arriving early. Dedication means working hard until your classroom tasks are properly finished.

3. Phonemic Awareness Practice: The Rhyme Match

The teacher writes a word from the song on the board and asks pupils to clap when they hear a word that rhymes with it.

  • Teacher: "I say Late. Does Cat rhyme with late?"  \Pupils \: No!

  • Teacher: "Does Gate rhyme with late?" \Pupils: Yes! (Clap)

Class Evaluation / Practice

  1. Rhyme Hunting: In the safety song, which word rhymes with play? (Answer: away)

  2. Safety Check: What should you do if an unsafe person asks you to go to an abandoned place? (Answer: Say no and run away to a safe adult)

  3. Values Question: What does it mean to be punctual? (Answer: Coming to school or work early)
