DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENTGOAL:
This programme is designed to provide the technicia
n with knowledge, skill to assists in planning,
collating, discriminating, monitoring and manage in
formation required at the local, state and federal
levels in other to ensure effective and comprehensi
ve national health care delivery.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
At the end of the course, a technician of this prog
ramme should be able to:
i. Assists in planning and organizing he
alth information services in health delivery system
.
ii. Organize and control health records, under supe
rvision, in health establishment.
iii. Collect, store, retrieve and preserve health i
nformation.
iv. Collect, analyze, present health statistical da
ta under supervision.
v. Participate in planning quality control evaluati
on, researches in health delivery system and
other relevant communities in defining, stand healt
h information.
vi. Assist in designing standardizing and controlli
ng health record form.
LEVELS OF THE PROGRAMME
Health Information Technician i.e. certificate cour
se in health information management.
DURATION
Its duration shall be three academic sessions of si
x semesters including supervised clinical work
experience (S.I.W.E.S.)
COURSE EVALUATION
Candidates must attend at least 75% of the prescribed lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical lessons in the laboratory in each semester. Examination of
each course shall be held at the end of each
semester where prescribed and the result of such ex
amination may include an assessment through term
papers, continuous assessment, short quizzes or tes
ts which shall carry 30%-40% and the semester
examination which shall carry 60-70%.
AWARD OF GRADES
A candidate shall be recorded as having attained in
a course a level of achievement graded as follows:
A = 70% and above - Excellent
B = 60% - 69% - Very Good
C = 50% - 59% - Good
D = 45% - 49% - Satisfactory
E = 40% - 44% - Pass
F = 0% - 39% - Failure
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
The prospective candidates intending to read for Te
chnical course in health information management
(N.C.I.M.) must posses a minimum of five passes, th
ree of which must be at credit level at a sitting a
t
the senior secondary school certificate examination
(S.S.C.E.) or its equivalent. Subjects to be passe
d
must include English language, mathematics, biology
or health science and two other subjects.
In exceptional cases, matured candidates with fewer
qualifications but with at least 7 years working
experience in the Nigerian Health information manag
ement board.
REGISTRATION FOR COURSES.
All students are required to register for their cou
rses at the beginning of each semester in accordanc
e
with the rules made from time to time by the school
. A student shall be deemed to have begun his
course of studies on the day of his registration fo
r that course.
All registration formalities shall be completed wit
hin the stipulated period.
COURSE DURATION

The Health Information Technician is a three year t
erminal programme.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
The curriculum of The Health Information Technician
programme has five main components. These are:
i. General studies/education
ii. Basic foundation courses
iii. Professional/specialized courses
iv. Electives
v. Supervised Industrial work Scheme (S.I.W.E.S.)
CERTIFICATE
A graduate of this programme would be awarded Healt
h Technician certificate in Health Information
management.
STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (S.I.W.E.
S.)
All students registered for the programme shall be
exposed to a period of industrial work experience
scheme, normally referred to as (SIWES). The traini
ng shall take place during the long vacation of the
second semester.
Students shall be exposed to a combination of field
experience, office experience either in the public
or
private health institutions. Students are expected
to submit a systematic log book and a brief written
report for assessment at the end of the training pe
riod, to their respective school and the board.
