DEPERTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES GOALS
The aim of the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) certificate course is to provide uniform and comparable standard of training for laboratory assistants and technicians throughout the country in
accordance with the Medical Laboratory Science council Oct11 2003.
The department was established to train:
1. Medical Laboratory Technicians and
2. Medical Laboratory Assistants
OBJECTIVES:
To meet the manpower needs for the successful implementation of Primary Health Care (PHC) in
Nigeria. At the end of the course, the Medical Laboratory Technicians are able to man the PHC
laboratory where they perform a good range of laboratory examinations using basic equipments. The
Medical Laboratory Assistant is an auxiliary staff.
The Medical Laboratory Science council of Nigeria (MLSCN) is the professional regulatory body that maintains standards and uniformity in the training of medical laboratory personnel in Nigeria. The MLSCN conducts the national examination twice yearly (March and October respectively).Successful candidates are subsequently issued with certificates and are duly registered to practice.
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN COURSE (3 YEARS) ENTRY REQUIREMENT:
Four credit passes in SSCE/NECO which must include Biology, Chemistry in addition to at least a pass in English Language and Mathematics obtained at not more than two sittings and not more than 5 years old. Credit passes in all relevant science and English Language also ever qualifies a candidate.Candidates with 5 credit passes in English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics are usually not admitted for this programme but are advised to seek admission for a degree programme in Medical Laboratory science (BMLS) in any of the Nigerian Universities.
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN COURSE (2 YEARS)
This programme is designed for qualified medical laboratory assistants. They must also meet the
general entry requirement stated above.
MEDICAL LABORATORY COURSE (2 YEARS)
A credit pass in biology/Chemistry and four passes which should include English Language and any
other subjects obtained at not more than two sittings and should not be more than 5 years old. Credit
passes in all science subjects including English Language ever qualifies the candidate for admission.
NATIONAL EXAMINATION FORMAT
The examination which is controlled by the governing council shall consist of:
a. written paper: Not exceeding 21/2 hours duration
b. Practical paper; Not more than 3 hours and
c. Oral Examination: Not more than 15 minutes.
